The Nigeria Union of Journalalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, 2018 press week has come and gone. It was celebrated in a ground style with so many colours added to it.
Apart from the Akogun Tai Oguntayo-led Press Week in 2006 during which the duo of late Juju Maestro of Won Keresi Number wa fame, Fatai Rolling Dollar and Juju Exponent, Taye Currency were brought to the ancient town of Ado Ekiti to trill pen pushers, this years Press Week led by Comrade Remi Koleoso was acknowledged a jinx breaker since in the history of the Union in Ekiti State
The state chairman of NUJ, Comrade Rotimi Ojomoyela took over the mantle of leadership of the Nigerian Union of Journalists a year ago amidst several scheming and bickering is yet to get handing over note from the last administration yet new grounds are being broken. The rest is now history
Comrade Ojomoyela and his executive committee kicked the ball rolling immediately they assumed office to make a difference. The press week was constituted at the congress and Comrade Remi Koleoso was made the chairman. After inauguration, the Committee swung into action with plans to make the press week a remarkable one.
Koleoso, a senior journalist with the News Agency of Nigeria, took it upon himself, together with his brilliant team, to line up different activities to make the week a befitting one not only to the media family but also to the society that the pen profession mirrors.
Among the activities executed during the 2018 press week were: indoor games like Table Tennis, Draft, Wot etc. The press week commenced on Wednesday, 12th of December with a walk road show early in the morning from the NUJ Secretariat through Atikainkain to Okesa back to the NUJ secretariat to sensitised people on the commencement of the press week and there was health talk later in the day at the NUJ permanent site along NTA road Ado Ekiti
The wife of the governor of Ekiti State, Her Excellency Erelu Bisi Fayemi delivered the lecture titled "Reclaiming our land, Restoring our values: Beyond slogan" she charged journalists to be positive and developmental in their reportage and she disclosed the readiness of the governor to embark on certain reforms.
The Friday event was climaxed with the Jumat service held at the central mosque Ado Ekiti which was well attended by the media practioners and well wishers with a message to always be professional in the course of the profession.
However the Saturday event seemed to be the mother of all events at the AB hotel Adebayo, Ado Ekiti. It was a dinner night and award ceremony which saw the cream of dignitaries from all walks of life receiving different awards. The governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi was conferred with the grand patron of the NUJ, Ekiti State Council which was presented by the NUJ president, Chris Nsiguezo represented by Comrade Cosmos Oni, Zone B Vice President. The former NUJ Chairman Ekiti State, Akogun Tai Oguntayo presented the Union's award to Rev. Tunde Afe for his contribution to the State Council of NUJ. The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi represented by Mrs. Monisola Oloro urged journalists to continue to uphold the ethics of the profession at all time.
It was a round of accolades for the Secretary of the Fountain Newsbreaker Chapel, Comrade Femi Oguntayo as he stepped forward to lead the winners of the indoor games who were also given different gifts at the dinner. Newsbreaker Chapel came first in the Draught and WHOT competitions.
The State NUJ Chairman was full of joy to have seen the event colourful, eventful and assured the press family to continue to discharge his leadership qualities at all time and solicited for the cooperation of members of the union. The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Yinka Oyebode, foremost journalist and chairman House committee on information, EKHA, Gboyega Aribisogan, the Deputy Speaker of EKHA, Segun Adewumi, Sunday Akinniyi were among the dignitaries that graced the occasion.
The dinner and the award night was like an avenue for the journalists far and near in Ekiti to have fun and merriment together. It was colourful and a show of dignifying moment for the media practioners. The five days event was put to an end with a Thanksgiving at the House of Faith, Adebayo Ado Ekiti with cream of people in attendance to give thanks to God for a successful.
The 2018 NUJ press week has come and gone. Certain things were observed. The leadership style of the chairman of the union Comrade Rotimi Ojomoyela is exemplary. Since he has been driving the ship of the union, there has been developmental changes.
The monthly congress is made participatory and rotational among the various chapels in the State. The bar of the union at the secretariat now well. The Chairman and his executive cordinally relate smoothly which has transformed to the progress achieved so far. This can be felt by the media practioners in various chapels under Ojomoyela's watch.
The Remi Koleoso led 2018 Press Week did not disappoint the pen profession rather, it presented a successful outing. Though, Thursday's lecture that was to be delivered by Barrister Femi Falana SAN which did not hold due to unforeseen situation, needs to be guided against should in case of next time.
The NUJ Press Week program was well articulated, supervised and successfully delivered. Kudos to the 2018 press week committee. The subsequent press week committees will have course to learn from this success story which will go a long way in the annals of history of the Nigerian Union of Journalists Ekiti State Chapter.
